What is breast implant exchange?

A cosmetic breast implant exchange is a surgical procedure performed to replace existing breast implants with new ones. This procedure is typically chosen by individuals who have previously undergone breast augmentation but wish to change the size, shape, or type of their implants.

During a cosmetic breast implant exchange, Dr. Viradia will make incisions in the same location as the initial breast augmentation surgery. The existing implants are then removed, and Dr. Viradia will assess the breast tissue and pocket to ensure it is in good condition. If necessary, adjustments may be made to the pocket to accommodate the new implants.

Once the adjustments are made, the surgeon will insert the new implants into the breast pocket. The incisions are then closed using sutures or surgical tape, and dressings or bandages are applied to protect the incision sites.

The recovery process for a cosmetic breast implant exchange is similar to that of a primary breast augmentation. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the days following the surgery. It is important to follow Dr. Viradia’s post-operative instructions, including wearing a supportive bra, taking prescribed medications, and avoiding strenuous activities.

It is recommended to consult with our qualified plastic surgeon, Dr. Viradia to discuss your specific goals and expectations for a cosmetic breast implant exchange. He will be able to provide you with personalized advice and guidance based on your individual circumstances.

What are the benefits of breast implant exchange?

There are several potential benefits to undergoing a cosmetic breast implant exchange. These include:

  1. Size and shape adjustment: One of the primary reasons for a breast implant exchange is to change the size or shape of the breasts. This allows individuals to achieve their desired aesthetic goals and improve their overall body proportions.
  2. Implant type change: Some individuals may choose to exchange their implants to switch from saline to silicone implants, or vice versa. This can be due to personal preference, changes in implant technology, or to address specific concerns such as implant rupture or capsular contracture.
  3. Correcting complications: In some cases, individuals may experience complications with their existing breast implants, such as implant rupture, capsular contracture, or implant malposition. A breast implant exchange can help correct these issues and restore the desired appearance and comfort.
  4. Addressing changes over time: The breasts can change over time due to factors such as weight fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or natural aging. A breast implant exchange can help address these changes and restore a more youthful and desired appearance.
  5. Improved self-confidence: For many individuals, the decision to undergo a breast implant exchange is driven by a desire to enhance their self-confidence and body image. Achieving the desired breast size, shape, and symmetry can have a positive impact on self-esteem and overall well-being.

What is the breast implant exchange recovery process like?

The recovery time for a cosmetic breast implant exchange can vary from person to person, but here is a general timeline:

  • Immediately after surgery: You will be taken to a recovery area where you will be monitored closely. You may experience some pain, swelling, and discomfort.
  • First few days: You will need to wear a supportive surgical bra or compression garment to help reduce swelling and provide support to the breasts. You may also have drains in place to remove excess fluid.
  • First week: You should avoid any strenuous activities and our instructions for pain management. It is important to get plenty of rest and avoid lifting heavy objects.
  • First few weeks: Swelling and bruising will gradually subside, and you may start to feel more comfortable. You should still avoid any activities that could strain your incisions or breasts.
  • First few months: Your breasts will continue to heal, and you may notice improvements in shape and size. It is important to attend follow-up appointments for us to monitor your progress.
  • Final results: It can take several months to a year for the final results of your breast implant exchange to be fully apparent.
